PANASONIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS, K.K., INTRODUCES “B.Y.O.D.” SOLUTION TO UNIVERSITIES IN JAPAN USING CLOUDPAGING FROM NUMECENT

A growing need for application compatibility emerges as increasing numbers of students use their personal handheld computer devices to access higher learning coursework.

Osaka City, Japan – January 15, 2018 – Panasonic Information Systems, K.K. launched the country’s educational institutions’ BYOD* [program] using the application delivery solution, Cloudpaging™ developed by Numecent (Headquarters: Irvine, California.)

* BYOD: Bring personal handheld equipment to work or school and use it for work or lessons.

At universities throughout the country, efforts are being expanded on “student PC necessity” for the purpose of promoting active learning using ICT. However, while benefiting from being able to learn at home and on the other hand, issues such as “a lot of man-hours are required for user support for application distribution and introduction” and “management of application licenses is cumbersome” are becoming obvious.

“Cloudpaging” is a solution that allows applications to be delivered from the cloud using Numecent’s proprietary technology to package Windows applications. Students can use the university’s own applications on their PCs as soon as they need it.

  • Most Windows applications can be virtualized
  • Self-service app store
  • One server supports thousands of users
  • Just click on the terminal you want to use without installing it
  • Initially, it is possible to execute by acquiring about 5% of the application capacity

Moreover, it is easy to use even on a low-speed network, and many applications can be used even on PCs with small disk capacity. This is because the download size at the first use can be greatly reduced to about 5% of the application capacity. For example, if the application is 3.5 GB, it is [reduced to a 175 MB pre-fetch size.]

For universities who manage applications, it becomes possible to manage unified management of applications including licenses, which greatly reduces the administrative burden and limits the distribution destinations of applications to only the necessary students, reduction can also be expected.

Panasonic will offer “Cloudpaging” with these features as “BYOD solution for educational institutions” together with “WiFi maintenance”, “Virus countermeasure” etc. necessary for student PC necessity indispensability. We will sell it as a partner company of Ascentech, K.K. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President: Naohiro Sato), a domestic distributor of Cloudpaging.

Panasonic is also progressively working on a netboot type thin client system for PC class from 2009, and have already installed in more than 280 educational institutions.

In the future, Panasonic will propose BYOD solution by “Cloudpaging” alone, commercialize solutions for PC classes combined with net boot type thin client system, and aim for sales of 600 million yen by the end of fiscal 2020.

(1) Provision start date:  January 15, 2018

(2) Standard price:  From 30 million yen to 1,500 users, 10 applications and 5 year usage period (depending on system configuration)

(3) Goal:  600 million yen by the end of fiscal 2020

We are very proud to be part of it by providing Cloudpaging components necessary for the success of the BYOD solution in the Japanese higher education market.

Cloudpaging can support diverse computing needs of higher education institutions including BYOD delivery.

We are pleased to announce that Panasonic Information Systems, K.K. has recently begun offering “BYOD solution for educational institutions” utilizing Numecent’s “Cloudpaging”, an advanced application distribution solution.

Numecent “Cloudpaging,” which we are providing domestically since 2016, is gaining high attention due to its advanced nature in application delivery technology. By combining the abundant expertise of Panasonic Information Systems, we are expecting that change will be made to the use of applications at educational institutions and IT utilization will be further promoted.
